Our 6th annual Sokolský Běh Republiky is happening on Sunday, 25, October 2026,
at Seal Point Park, Ryder Park Picnic Area, San Mateo, CA.
We'll meet at Seal Point Park, which has a lovely playground, restrooms, drinking fountains, picnic tables, and grills. After the run, we'll have lunch together, potluck style. Sokol SF and the Czech School of California will provide charcoal for grilling and light refreshments. Treats you bring to share with everyone are also welcome.

2 pm - Winery Tour for our group - tour takes about 1 hour

Join us for an outdoor picnic lunch and bring some food for the grill and maybe something to share :-)
Czech food to remind us of home is always welcome!
We will have the BBQ ready to grill from 11:30 am.
Children's fun activities, such as the potato sack race, ring toss, egg-and-spoon race, and more surprises, will commence at 2 pm.
We are asking Sokol members and friends to be part of our community, and please help out during the picnic and with staffing the children's games. Thank you!
We are meeting at Lake Chabot, the Turtle Picnic Area by the lake, with large picnic tables and an extra-large BBQ.
Please note that it is a different picnic area from previous years. It is closer to the parking lot, yey!
If you play a guitar or other musical instrument, do not be shy and bring it with you, and we will help you sing!

Take your very own shortcut to Europe and enjoy the Old Continent without any jet lag. From Ireland and Italy to Spain and Slovakia, all European Union member states participate in this annual citywide open house experience.
We are also planning a visit to the Sokol Washington DC Unit to meet their members and explore the area together. They were the first unit to bring Sokolsky Beh Republiky to the USA! Let's see what else we can learn from them :-)
Each member will be responsible for making their own flight arrangements, booking their hotel room, and meals during the stay.
We will be staying at the Residence Inn by Marriott Washington Downtown/Convention Center

Hidden Villa hiking trail
Saturday, May 2, 2026 @ 2 pm
We will meet @ 2 pm in the main parking lot, near the big tree at the down-valley end of the lot, right where that Google Maps pin puts you - see the link below.
There is a $10 parking fee.
Dogs are not allowed on the hiking trails.
This hike is kid-friendly, and we invite people to bring snacks to picnic afterwards.
Let’s get to know each other and have some fun!
There is a nice place to picnic by a stream where children wade, with picnic tables. People should bring picnic blankets in case - we can leave picnic items in Mike's car until after the hike, then he will run ahead to fetch them (the picnic area is 200 meters or so from the parking lot). This time of year, the grass is soft.
There are goats, pigs, and sheep in little pens, but it is not a petting zoo; you can see them, and they may come up to the fence.
The hike will be shaded and relatively flat. We will follow the beautiful flowing Adobe Creek, as far as people care to go, out and back. There are no long-distance views; instead, it is a cozy, quiet valley with tiny waterfalls.

Rusalka is a spellbinding Czech opera by Antonín Dvořák, based in part on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. It has many similarities with the Disney variation on the story, paired with a tragic ending. The story tells the tale of a water nymph who trades her ethereal voice for a human form to win the love of a prince. When her dream turns into rejection, betrayal, and tragedy follow. The opera’s most unforgettable moment is the haunting aria “Song to the Moon”, where Rusalka pleads with the moon to carry her love to the prince. With themes of forbidden love and sacrifice, paired with profoundly beautiful music, Rusalka is a dark fairy tale steeped in magic, longing, and tragedy. In Czech with English subtitles.

It is a tradition in our unit to remember T.G. Masaryk around his birthday with a hike and a visit to his bust in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This year, we will be joined by students of the Czech School of California, as the students are participating in a project Československé stopy ve světě
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was a Czechoslovakian statesman, political activist, and philosopher who served as the first president of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1935. He is regarded as the founding father of Czechoslovakia.
Masaryk's birthday is March 7th. We will lay flowers at his bust in the Rose Garden. The bust was donated to Golden Gate Park by Sokol San Francisco many years ago. Come and hear the story.
We will also visit the Observatory Deck of the de Young Museum to get a 360-degree view of San Francisco. It is free of charge, and the views are breathtaking!
We will continue past the Japanese Tea Gardens, back to Stow Lake, cross the Stow Lake Bridge to visit the waterfalls, and end up back by the boathouse.
It is an easy hike and all flat. Hopefully, the flowers will have started blooming so we can welcome spring on this beautiful hike.

It is a very gradual uphill on the Betsy Crowder trail then a moderate uphill on Spring Ridge trail, with good views soon and great views across the bay starting at 1 mile in.
It is an out and back.
There will definitely be flowers blooming.
If there is a wide range of fitness levels and we can split into groups of 3 or more to provide a good intensity to everybody, I would want to do that.
People may need to park along the road.
Mike will be waiting at the end of the parking lot farthest from the road, wearing a blue Sokol t-shirt.

Hands-On Christmas Cookie Baking and Decorating Classes

Two sessions: 1:30 pm & 3:00 pm
Each session is one hour long
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm and 3 pm - 4 pm
Both sessions are suitable for kids, but parents must be there with their children.
Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of class so we can begin on time.
We will work with traditional Czech Christmas cookies, like linecké cookies, gingerbread cookies, and vanilkové rohlíčky cookies.
Everyone will leave with baked goodies and in a festive mood!
Wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting some flour, sugar, or frosting on
NOTE: We will also be working with nuts.
Suggested donation is $10 per person.

Join us for a hike at Briones Reservoir. This will be about a 3-mile in-and-out hike. No worries! We will not hike the entire 13-mile loop around the lake, but if you desire to do so, you can. This is a moderate hike; trees mostly shade the trail with some beautiful views of the lake.
Dogs can come too :-) Parking is free.

We were lucky enough to secure the fantastic band, the Groove Doctors. Enjoy their music, featuring a variety of genres, with their two singers and band. Their brass section incorporates a trumpet, saxophone & trombone, accented by guitars and drums lets them electrify a room with an assortment of tunes.
The buffet Dinner will include some of our favorite dishes featuring Pan-Seared Salmon and Flank Steak.
You will want to be on time, as we will start out with performances from the students from the Czech School. Stay for the night, as we will culminate with a fun raffle drawing.

Sokol SF is hosting a virtual presentation and Q&A with JUDr. Jiri Kratky, Special Envoy for Expatriate Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. The topic will be "distancni volby" and how Czech citizens living abroad will be able to vote by mail starting in the Fall 2025. The presentation and Q&A will be in Czech.
We invited you to write a rhyme on any topic you felt comfortable writing, in whatever style you preferred. The contest rules were limitless: topic, language, style, and length. Submissions also used the “code-switching” method, which means they crisscrossed the language in their writing in multiple languages. Read the submitted poems.

The Ambroš Duo, a renowned mother-son music duo visiting from the capital city of Prague in the Czech Republic, will be performing at Piedmont Center for the Arts on Thursday, March 6, 2025. The concert will feature works by Paganini, Rachmaninov, and Czech composers Dvorák, Janáček, Ježek and Suk, and a piece by John Williams. The concert will conclude with the lively “Monti Czardas.”

Folk ingenuity at its best is expressed in the picturesque wooden churches of Slovakia. The perfect harmony of the soul with nature still speaks to us today. Whether Protestant, Catholic, Greek Catholic, or Orthodox, Slovak wooden churches are breathtakingly beautiful. They have an exceptional worldwide value, which is why they are part of the UNESCO global human heritage.
Some of them were built 5 centuries ago!
Others were constructed without a single nail!
There were once over 300 wooden churches in Slovakia.
Sixty remain for us to admire today.
Join Renata Bricka to learn more about this unique part of the inheritance of our ancestors. Renata Helena Bricka, born in Slovakia, moved to the US in 1982. She holds an MA in Fine Arts and Art History and an MA in Russian Language and Literature. Renata's career has been rich. She has worked as a translator at the Oregon State University, designed opera costumes, and taught costume design and art. She also worked as a docent in the Haggin Museum and currently gives many varied presentations on Art History. Renata Bricka received several awards for her costume design and also an award from the Stockton Arts Commission.
The event is free of charge, but registration is required.

Students from the Czech School of California will be singing and showcasing historical presentation. Staff will be available to answer your questions about the school and enrollment.

Prof. Ethan Scheiner, the author of the book Freedom to Win - a Cold War story of the courageous Czechoslovakian hockey team that fought the Soviets for the soul of its people - and Olympic Gold - will be selling and signing this book!
Free Mobile Czech Book library will also be on site for you to take new reading material home.
